Developmental editing
I’ll work with you on the early stages or rough draft of your writing project, looking at the big picture and offering my perspective on the relationships between characters, plot development and themes, and how the chapters and scenes are structured overall.
Sometimes called substantive or structural editing, this is the first stage of the editing process, before you complete your manuscript and before you have it line or copy-edited.
Line editing
I’ll work on your writing line-by-line, maintaining your unique voice and helping to improve sentence structure and clarity, word choice and syntax, ensuring it is consistent, flows well and delivers your message to your readers effectively. I’ll make sure your narrative overall is logical and consistent in style and tone. Thorough line-editing can elevate your writing and make it stand out.
This is usually the first stage of editing a completed manuscript, after developmental editing and before proofreading.
Copy editing
I’ll edit your work at the mechanical level, focusing on consistency and accuracy of spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax, capitalisation, hyphenation, spacing, dialogue tagging and chapter sequence. I’ll also make sure the style, tone and flow of your writing works as you want it to.
This is similar but distinct from line editing, and they can sometimes be combined, it comes after developmental and line edits.
Proofreading
I’ll check for errors and inconsistencies in spelling, punctuation, spacing and layout, that your page and chapter numbering is consistent and that there isn’t anything missing.
This is the very final (and essential!) check of your completed manuscript before you send it for publishing and comes after line and copy-editing.
I am very happy with the job Rachel has done with my novel. Her edits have significantly improved its language and style without taking away my author’s voice. The result is amazing! Working with Rachel has been a pleasure – she kept the deadline we had agreed on, has been responsive, and has answered all my questions, and suggestions in a speedy and efficient manner.
